In 2017-18, UOPD assumed professional management of the UO's long-standing Safe Ride and Designated Driver Shuttle programs that help students get home safely.
After analyzing rider demand, UOPD added the fixed-route UO Campus Shuttle service in January 2018, to offer another way for UO community members to get safely around the campus area.
Since UOPD took over management of the ride programs, average rides per month have increased about 440 percent. Together, Safe Ride, DDS, and the UO Campus Shuttle provide about 5,000 student rides per month.
Even with the return of ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft to the Eugene area in fall 2018, the ride services are a staple of the campus community. Students without the means to pay for a per-ride service like taxis or ride-hailing, or who need more tailored service than the bus, count on the ride programs as a trusted, secure option operated by Ducks, for Ducks.
UOPD continuously assesses program utilization and efficiency, looking for the best ways to maximize vehicle deployment and driver and navigator time. The programs employ over 100 UO students, operating seven days per week during the academic terms.
These ride resources are still free to students. The programs continue to be staffed and guided by UO students, but operated to expand service and utilization, and increase efficiency and reliability.
Support Safe Rides during #DucksGive, and help ensure UO students remain safe.
