Advance the Mission of the Black Cultural Center

The Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center (BCC) empowers Black students at the University of Oregon by serving as a catalyst for academic achievement and personal growth.  Through its commitment to Black student success, the BCC enriches the cultural fabric and collective development of the entire university community

In 2019, the BCC opened its doors to the UO Black community to engage UO students and the greater community academically, socially, and culturally. Looking back on the past seven years, we have had the opportunity to serve our students, connect with alumni, and foster partnerships across the University campus. This home for Black students is a welcoming and supportive space, where we continue to nurture students along their academic journey.

One of the most effective tools we have for our students who engage in student leadership, academic prowess, and community service is the Black Cultural Center Scholarship Fund. This scholarship invests in the success of students who enhance the cultural and social development of the entire UO community.

Since 2021, we have awarded 35 scholarships totaling over $135,000. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on financial need with a preference for students who are non-residents and have engaged with the Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center, participated in the Umoja Academic Residential Community, and/or are majoring or minoring in Black Studies or Ethnic Studies, and are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. The LRP BCC Scholarship Fund aims to close the gap when other UO scholarships do not fully meet students' financial needs. We have been able to increase the award every year in consideration of the cost of attending a university and the current economic climate.

With the support of donorswe hope to add a Professional Development Award that will support one undergraduate and one graduate students’ career preparation endeavors.
