Law students across the country report an increased need for support with their mental health, wellness, and wellbeing while in law school. In a 2021 survey addressing law student well-being published in the University of Louisville Law Review, nearly 70% of respondents indicated they needed help in the past year for emotional or mental health problems — a significant increase from 42% in 2014.
Law students tackle some of the most demanding academic courseloads. They learn about legal discourse through the study of cases, regulations, and laws – many of which present a moralistic or human component. Throughout this process they must remain neutral, relying on patterns, client issues, and blackletter law to form conclusions.
In this mindset, law school students can struggle to be proactive when it comes to their mental health, with many students developing unhealthy response mechanisms including substance abuse and neglect of their emotional and physical wellbeing. Stigmas surrounding mental health, or just a lack of access to treatment may prevent them from seeking support.
