Preserve Oregon’s History

The University of Oregon Libraries has been dedicated to collecting and providing access to newspapers for over a century. Through the Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP), we have the most comprehensive collection of Oregon newspapers in the state. This vital resource safeguards cultural heritage and historical records—an increasingly important mission in a time when local journalism is on the decline.

The ODNP preserves journalistic publications from all over Oregon by collecting, scanning, and posting them online, available for free to everyone. Our collections hold more than 2.5 million pages (and growing!) from Oregon newspapers dating back to 1846, offering decades of Oregon’s history at your fingertips, completely free, instead of being locked behind paywalls.

"I use Historic Oregon Newspapers frequently in my teaching and research on regional history. It has transformed students’ ability to learn about the social and economic histories of cities and towns in Oregon.” - Michael Aronson, Associate Professor, Cinema Studies

With your help, we’d like to add the Eugene Weekly to our collection in 2025!

Eugene Weekly, a weekly print and digital newspaper, has been a community mainstay for over 40 years, offering award-winning coverage of arts and culture, news, and local and state politics. Now, the ODNP is working to get the entire publication (from 1982 to the present) digitized and posted online, and we need your help to finish the project.

“Completing the digital archive of Eugene Weekly is crucial to preserving a significant piece of our local history and culture. It allows future generations to explore and appreciate the perspectives, stories and events that have shaped our community over the years. This is especially important today, when news businesses (and journalists) are often under threat.” - Jody Rolnick, Eugene Weekly Publisher

Your gift today will directly support the digitization of this beloved publication, ensuring that students, historians, and interested community members have free access to decades of local history, preserved for future generations. Join us in safeguarding the past, enriching the present, and ensuring that the stories of our communities remain accessible to all. Your gift today makes a lasting impact.
