The Problem
In today's complex and evolving world, fostering diversity and inclusion within STEM fields is more critical than ever. Science education is a path to satisfying and lucrative careers, a necessity for informed citizens in the modern age, and a right all children should have. Sadly, the cultures of both educations and science rarely provide the kinds of experiences that help youth from marginalized groups develop as future scientists.
Our Program
The Science Program to Inspire Creativity and Excellence (SPICE) at the University of Oregon is dedicated to this mission by engaging middle school girls, as well as trans and non-binary youth, in the wonders of science through immersive, hands-on experiences.
SPICE offers cohort-based summer camps designed to ignite curiosity and build confidence in young scientists. These programs not only cultivate a passion for discovery but also empower participants to envision themselves as future leaders in science and technology. By creating an environment where all students feel valued and included, SPICE actively works to bridge the diversity gap in STEM fields.
The Need
However, financial barriers can prevent many talented and eager students from accessing these transformative opportunities. To ensure that every child, regardless of their economic background, can participate, SPICE provides scholarships to campers in need. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of donors who believe in the power of education and the importance of equity.
Our Successes
Nearly 1,000 middle school aged youth have participated in SPICE Summer camps. Research shows statistically significant increases in campers’ affinities, attitudes, interest, and identities in science. Our alumni have gone on to study engineering, medicine, chemistry, biology, and many more. More than 100 alumni have returned to the program as volunteers. The majority of the SPICE instructor pool are former campers. These youth who started with us as excited 11 year olds are now science education leaders in their own right, developing new curriculum, building their skills as scientists, and inspire the next generation of science-lovers.
The Call
